“Hellenica Oxyrhynchia” -A Japanese Translation of the Papyrus-Fragment on Greek History Discovered at Oxyrhynchus-

This is a translation into Japanese of the so-called “Hellenica Oxyrhynchia,” the papyrus discovered at Oxyrhychus in Egypt, in 1908, by B.P, GRENFELL and A..S. HUNT. The auther is not yet definitely konwn, in spite of the repeated attempts so far of nearly seventy scholars with their more than a hundred publications at setting the problem of its authorship. The fragment is not a very long one, but is of great importance in that it furnishes considerable details of various events in the Greek world, 396-395 B.C. and additional veluable information on several matters, some of which are found in no other work on the period. The chronological arrangement of events by its author is evidently imitated from Thucydides, and the papyrus was intended to be a continuation of his work. It is almost certain that the papyrus was written between 387 and 346 B.C., but its exact date is not known yet. The translation forms part of my study on the “Hellenica Oxyrhynchia,” a minute introduction and commentary, which is now under preparation, will be added in the near future
